it's a one-time shot and once it's done your mail will be in sync across all devices. In order to do this, though, the client has to sync with the server when you first configure it. It also has the added advantage (for most people) that mail is synched across all devices, so if you check your mail on your iPad, your iPhone and your Mac then only new messages that haven't been read on any device are flagged as new. Pretty much the whole point of IMAP accounts is that all the mail data is stored on the server, just so that if you add a new machine (maybe your old one died, was stolen, fell under a bus, etc.) then you still have all your mail data available.
User does NOT want all of the older (thousands) of email messages to download to new Mac laptop But, there should be someone that knows how to setup the individual mac desktop or laptop, to "filter, block, or restrict" a particular "range" of the emails from being accepted by the desktop or laptop's Mac Mail program? Shouldn't there be a way to have the individual mac tell the Mac Mail Server that it only wants to download/sync the emails from a certain date forward? This seems like a pretty basic thing to me? If it can't be done currently, then it should be something that we can require from Apple's people to fix.īut, that IS the purpose of these forums, to ASK if something can be done, and to have people HELP by showing us how. I do understand the way the Apple Mail Server stores the messages, so that they "can" be synced. Instead of putting people down for asking how to do something, we should ALL encourage as many questions as possible! That is the only way we will improve computing in the future. Imagine if we all just accepted the answer "deal with it" when it comes to computers………we would all still be using Windows. Really? If you don't want this then you need to device a new mail service protocol and convince the rest of the internet to give up on IMAP and implement your new uber-solution.
